City of Kamloops
Friday, September 9th, 2005
Kamloops, the third largest city in the Interior of British Columbia (population of 84,000) offers visitors all the amenities of a big city - first class accommodation and dining, a lively arts scene, modern shops, a full range of businesses and wonderful parks and recreation facilities.

The word "Kamloops" comes from the Shuswap language - Tk'emlups - where the waters meet. First Nations people and fur traders took advantage of its location at the junction of two rivers to gather, conduct business, and participate in sports and recreation.

Today Kamloops is famous for its hospitality, not just in the community's everyday friendly approach to visitors, but also in its ability to host major convention and sporting events. Kamloops is the Tournament Capital of Canada and almost every weekend hosts a tournament or sporting event drawing people from around the province, the country and sometimes the world. The weekly Farmer's Market, a world-class wildlife park, nine golf courses, endless miles of walking and biking trails, and an exciting ride on a restored steam locomotive are just a few of the reasons to visit Kamloops time and time again. Kamloops is a vital transportation hub easily reached from every part of the province. British Columbia's four major highways, the Trans Canada, Yellowhead, Coquihalla, and Highway 97 meet in Kamloops. From downtown Vancouver it takes approximately 4 hours to drive to Kamloops via the Coquihalla Highway. Full service air and rail connections in the city cater to travelers from every corner of the globe, making the city truly international.
