Thursday, June 8th, 2006
Kamloops, B.C.: The Sunmore Ginseng Spa in Kamloops, B.C., is one of Canada’s best kept secrets. Not only is it the largest day spa in North America, but it is the first spa in North America to introduce ginseng into many of its treatments. The Ginseng Spa is a $5 million operation. The 20,000 square metre spa was specifically designed to reflect elements of Chinese traditions. It has five different areas to reflect five different elements: gold, fire, water, wood and earth.

The spa opened its doors in 2004, and it currently attracts over 85,000 clients annually. Many of its clients combine their spa visit with a stop at the Sunmore Ginseng processing and packaging facility to buy locally grown and processed ginseng. Canada is the third largest producer of Ginseng and the Sunmore Ginseng factory ships six 1,500 kgs containers of ginseng to Taiwan annually.

The Ginseng industry is proving to be profitable for Canada and the Sunmore Ginseng Spa has found success in merging the health components of ginseng with the relaxation components of spa therapy.

Spa treatments at Sunmore include ginseng steam room, ginseng facials, ginseng massage, ginseng salt body glow and a ginseng body detoxifying to list a few. At Sunmore, they believe to achieve a state of complete relaxation the body must rid itself of stress and tension.

Ginseng counteracts physical and emotional stress. Specifically, is known for its ability to help the body restore itself to health. It is widely used to lower cholesterol, increase energy and endurance, reduce fatigue and stress. It improves overall health and prevents infection.

Herbal remedies, such as ginseng, have picked up speed in the last decade and consumer interest and demand for herbal remedies are continuing to grow at staggering rates. This is part of a prevention trend, and includes consumers moving towards self-medication and the use of natural products instead of synthetics.
