| Slo-Pitch City Ground Breaking Day! Thursday, June 24th, 2010 |
Kamloops, BC – Phase 1 of the Rayleigh Slo-Pitch Park broke ground today at the former Rayleigh Correctional Facility site. The groundbreaking ceremony hosted by Mayor Peter Milobar included an address by MP Cathy McLeod, MLA Dr. Terry Lake, Councilor George Casimir, and representatives from the local slo-pitch and rugby clubs.
Total construction costs for this new Tournament Capital Project will be $9.79 million, with the Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments each contributing one-third. The projected completion date is set for March 31, 2011. "Today's ground-breaking is another example of how the Government of Canada has taken action to accelerate infrastructure investments that create jobs and boost our economy," said Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo. “This project will not only improve this community’s access to outdoor infrastructure, but will also contribute to Kamloops’ reputation as a world class tournament city.” This multi-million dollar project will result in 8 slo-pitch diamonds built to national tournament standards, 4 of which will have field lighting; 3 rugby pitches including at least 2 with full-size end zones; access road improvements and railway crossing improvements, including a notable entrance archway; washroom/change room complex; a multi-use plaza area with beer gardens and picnic areas; a playground area and walking paths; and landscaping that aims to preserve and restore the naturalized grass areas. “Not only will the new slo-pitch park help keep our community healthy and active, but it will be a huge boost for our local economy when we begin hosting tournaments at the new complex, “ said Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Dr. Terry Lake. According to Mayor Peter Milobar, the new slo-pitch park will be the last major project completed under the Tournament Capital initiative and will provide economic benefits to the Kamloops region long after it’s built. “The impact this facility will have on the tourism sector of our economy will be very positive as Kamloops will now have the ability to host slo-pitch tournaments at a whole new level.” Phase 2 of the Rayleigh project involves the development of an additional three parcels of land. The first site, approximately 14 hectares in size, will allow for crop production, while the second site of about 4 hectares has potential as an agri-tourism facility. The third site made up of 15 hectares is being looked at as an Agri-plex facility and agricultural exhibition site. The Tk’emlups Indian Band also owns an adjacent parcel of land and plans to develop a 150-stall RV park which will greatly benefit the Slo-Pitch Park as well as the Kamloops region. “Softball City is another legacy that the Tk’emlups Indian Band is proud to be a part of, in not only good governance, but building sport legacy for our community and creating a partnership that benefits our people,” said Chief Shane Gottfriedson.
