Canoeing in KamloopsThe variations in land elevations and abundance of lakes and rivers in Kamloops and surrounding areas provide great paddling opportunities. There are a full range of grades for testing canoeing and kayaking skills from the gentle flow of area lakes to the faster pace of the South and North Thompson Rivers.
Canoeing and Kayaking in Kamloops
> The North & South Thompson Rivers: The Thompson Rivers, which runs right through the city, are the perfect places to start a canoe or kayak adventure as there are a few boat launches along the river with plenty of parking for vehicles.
> Paul Lake: this quiet lake is located just 15 minutes from Kamloops and is also a great place to go out with on a guided tour.
> Shumway Lake: only 15 minutes from Kamloops, Shumway Lake is an exceptional lake running alongside the old Merritt Highway (Highway 5A). Shumway Lake is home to the Kamloops Canoe & Kayak Club, the Kamloops Rowing Club and the Kamloops Waterski Club.
Kayaking in Kamloops
> Kamloops Lake: this lake is a very large lake and is fed by the Thompson River. Kamloops Lake has a marina and various boat launches, plus spectacular views of Tobiano Golf Resort and community, the community of Savona and impressively large hoodoos with the 'Balancing Rock'.
> Shuswap Lakes: the Big & Little Shuswap Lakes are world renowned and offer paddlers a wonderful opportunity for paddling for miles and miles. Paddlers will have the opportunity to see many species of wildlife on the shores as well as majestic osprey and bald headed eagles.
> 100+ Lakes in the Area: there are too many lakes within an hour's drive of Kamloops to mention, but the Kamloops Visitor Centre will have some excellent recommendations based on visitors' specifications.
